Sony Ericsson X10 mini: The King of Compact

1. Design
Perhaps there is no other phone aptly named than the Sony Ericsson X10 mini as the mobile is incredibly tiny for such a powerful little handset. Although a bit on the chunky side, it seems to be one of the smaller mobile phones available on the market right now; if size is the only criteria used when looking for a new phone then look no further as this is the king of compact. The box is loaded with different colours and styles of back plates ranging from matte black to bright pink, so there is an option for everyone. The screen is made of plastic rather than glass which provides a bit of extra durability.
Quick Stats: 83 x 50 x 16mm, 88g

2. Software
The Sony Ericsson X10 mini is still running on the Android 1.6 operating system with whispers that a transition to the newest Android OS is in the near future. But for the time being, it really is a bit of a drag that the software is so out-dated, not really giving the X10 mini a fair shot at the other Android mobiles on the market.

Quick Stats: Android v1.6, 600MHz CPU, Internal memory 128MB, External microSD card

3. Battery
The handset has a talktime of 3.5 hours and a standby time of an astonishing 6 days

4. Display
The Sony Ericsson X10 mini doesn’t have the best resolution in the world, but that is to be expected as the mobile phone is so small. It really doesn’t make a noticeable difference, however, because there is so little screen to work with from the outset.
Quick Stats: 2.55 inch screen, 320×240 resolution, 16M colour
5. Usability
Although it is running off of an older Android version, the X10 mini is surprisingly user friendly. The touchscreen is so well done that typing and texting are a breeze with the innovative sliding keypad and great predictive text. The home screen is well formatted to help compensate for the lack of space available with four buttons in the corners to navigate your favourite apps and settings. Speaking of apps, Timescape has managed to work wonderfully on this version of the Sony Ericsson as you can keep all of your social media outlets in one place and can find updates in the bat of an eye.

6. Plan
Pay monthly seems to be the go-to payment option of choice with the mini.
7. Camera
For a handset so small it has a great big camera that packs a punch. It is incredible to think about how far these mobile cameras have come since they were first seen a few years ago.
Quick Facts: 5 Megapixels camera, auto focus, LED flash

While this mobile may not be for everyone, especially the smart phone aficionado, it is a great beginning smart phone, and is head and shoulders above any other handset in its size category. The operating system is strong enough to handle all of the daily tasks asked of it with reasonable efficiency. To Sony’s credit, a whole lot of thought clearly went into the user interface when designing a phone so, well, mini. It is a tiny phone that packs a considerably big bite.
